UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, is currently facing a funding crisis that threatens aid delivery in Gaza. This crisis has been exacerbated by accusations made by Israel in January, accusing UNRWA staff of being involved in an attack by Hamas militants. As a result, several countries, including the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia, have paused their funding for the agency.
The senior deputy director of UNRWA in Gaza, Scott Anderson, highlighted the key problem faced by the agency – whether or not they will be able to pay their staff to deliver essential food to the people in Gaza. This funding crisis comes at a critical time when the region is already grappling with the ongoing conflict.
During the UN General Assembly meeting, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed concern over the 16 countries that have paused their funding, amounting to $450 million. Lazzarini emphasized that these allegations against UNRWA staff were unsubstantiated. He stressed that with funding from member states and donors, UNRWA operations could continue and serve as a lifeline for Palestinian refugees across the region. However, without additional funding, UNRWA will face unprecedented challenges with serious implications for global peace and security.
Despite these challenges, UN staff members remain dedicated to their mission of providing aid to those in need. Anderson, speaking from Rafah in Egypt, emphasized the resilience of the staff who continue to feed 1.1 million people and vaccinate 80 percent of children in Gaza. He acknowledged the deteriorating situation in Gaza and highlighted the urgent need for food, water, medicine, tents, blankets, and most importantly, hope.
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the situation becomes even more critical. Ramadan holds significant importance for everyone in Gaza, and the need for support during this time is heightened. With less than a week until Ramadan begins, the urgency to secure funding and ensure aid delivery becomes even more pressing.
The funding crisis faced by UNRWA not only jeopardizes the agency’s ability to provide essential aid but also has wider implications for peace and security globally. It is crucial for countries to reconsider their decision to pause funding and recognize the vital role UNRWA plays in supporting Palestinian refugees.
