Due to the unrest in Israel and the Palestinian territories, the sporting world in the region has come to a standstill. Matches are postponed, national competitions are halted and foreign athletes in Israel are given the opportunity to leave the country.

Because airlines are canceling flights, some athletes and teams cannot enter or leave the country. Israeli gymnast Artem Dolgopyat – on Saturday he won gold in the floor section at the Gymnastics World Championships – cannot return to Israel. He will stay in Europe longer to continue training.

The Palestinian national football team has withdrawn from a friendly tournament in Malaysia. The Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) said the team could not fly to Kuala Lumpur due to the situation in the region.

Basketball players to Cyprus

Several sports competitions in Israel are experiencing disruption. For example, the international basketball matches of Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv and Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv have been postponed. The club Maccabi Tel Aviv has put all foreign basketball players on a flight to Cyprus. The rest of the team will follow later.

The national football competition in Israel has been halted. Football clubs Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv have given their foreign players permission to leave the country if they wish.

Football matches in the two leagues in the Palestinian territories, the West Bank Premier League and the Gaza Strip Premier League, have also been postponed.

The European Championship qualifying match of the Israeli handball team with Germany was already postponed on Saturday. And the European football association UEFA has decided that all matches scheduled in Israel in the coming weeks will be postponed.

Israel matches postponed

It was announced on Monday that Thursday’s European Championship qualifier between Israel and Switzerland will not take place. Young Israel’s home matches against Estonia and Germany have also been cancelled.

Israel’s national football team will play a European Championship qualifier in and against Kosovo on October 15. UEFA will announce later this week whether that match will go ahead. The Israeli team also has a home match against Romania and an away match against Andorra on the calendar in the third week of November.

The European swimming association LEN is currently considering what to do with the European Water Polo Championships, scheduled for January 3 to 16, 2024 in Netanya, Israel.
