Unrest about moving houseboats in West: “Our beautiful view is being spoiled”

Residents of West are concerned about the possible arrival of houseboats in their area. The houseboats are being relocated due to work.

Next year, the municipality will start repairs on the quay wall of Da Costakade and bridges in De Clercqstraat. A maximum of five years has been allocated for this. 36 houseboats must be temporarily relocated to carry out the work.

Exchange locations

Within a radius of 1500 meters, ten quays, divided over five canals, have been designated as possible switching locations. These are the Bilderdijkkade, the Geuzenkade, the Rijpgracht, the Postjeskade, the Willem de Zwijgerlaan and the Jacob van Lennepkade.

Next Tuesday, the executive board of the West district will probably decide which exchange locations are eligible and how the houseboats will be distributed among the various locations.

The houseboats that are being moved.

The houseboat residents themselves were allowed to indicate a preference for such a change location. Michiel Prins has chosen the Bilderdijkkade, a few hundred meters away. He thinks it is all a lot of hassle. “Move everything, reconnect everything.”

He also does not know when his boat will be moved or for how long. “I think it goes into subjects, because they can’t do everything at the same time. Actually, I don’t really know very well. I only hope for two years or so in the end.”

“Our beautiful view is spoiled and it is one of the few green areas”

Pieter de Jong – resident of Geuzekade

Pieter de Jong lives on the Geuzenkade and is not waiting for houseboats in front of his door, temporarily or not. “The first objection is that our beautiful view is being spoiled, the second objection is that it is a dog walking area and it is one of the few green areas in our part of town.”

The residents of the selected exchange locations have also had no further say. “So there was a say with the houseboat residents, but not here.”

Director Carolien de Heer of the West district says that relocating is still necessary. “I notice that at all quays where possible exchange locations can come, people have concerns and do not like it. I understand that, but when I say ‘you can decide’ I will soon have no place. This is not fun for anyone. But it is urgent. The quay is about to collapse. ”

“At all possible exchange locations, people worry and don’t like it”

Carolien de Heer, district administrator

The renovation of bridges and quays will take place between the end of 2021 and the end of 2026. After Tuesday, the district committee still has to consider it and a final decision will be taken. Environmental permits must also be requested.

The houseboat residents and the residents of the exchange locations will probably be notified in mid-April.
