Unreliable Chinese Cars Flood the Russian Car Market: Problems and Complaints

Chinese cars that have flooded the Russian car market since the introduction of sanctions are proving to be quite unreliable. Their owners complain of constant problems and are forced to visit service stations significantly more often. The information is from the Russian publication “Izvestia”.

In the 9 months of 2023, 35% more Chinese cars that are less than 4 years old were sent for repair than in the same period last year. Very often, Chery, Lifan and Geely brand cars arrive at service centers with problems, but the largest increase in requests at service centers was registered among owners of Haval brand vehicles (+88%).

The most problems with all Chinese cars are associated with the quality of assembly, and then with unreliable construction. The survey conducted shows that 61% of Russian drivers consider cars from China insufficiently adapted to Russian conditions, and 19% are of the opinion that Chinese cars are completely incapable of surviving harsh winters.

In particular, many Chinese cars have a thin metal body that does not withstand heavy loads and is prone to corrosion. The suspension fails on potholed roads and is not adapted to the active operation of the car in Russian conditions. The study also shows a very disturbing fact – quite often repairs are required only after a mileage of 20,000 kilometers. Another weak spot is automotive electronics from China.

We will remind you that after the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the import of cars from world brands practically stopped. Their niche was occupied by Chinese car manufacturers. In 2022, 162,000 cars from the Celestial Empire were imported into Russia, and for the first 8 months of 2023 – 287,000.
