Even 54 years after his death at the age of just 27: Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) remains in demand. The auction house Propstore is now auctioning off previously unreleased tapes by the exceptional guitarist. According to media reports, these are demo tapes from 1968. However, no previously unknown songs can be heard on them. Instead, the tapes contain alternative versions of four well-known songs: “Up From The Skies”, “Ain’t No Telling”, “Little Miss Lover” and “Stone Free”.
The first three songs come from “Axis: Bold as Love”, the second album by the guitarist and his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. “Stone Free” was released as the B-side of the single “Hey Joe”.
“More guitars” on previously unheard versions
The music on the tapes offered for auction should differ significantly from the known versions. “They’re much tighter and smoother. You can hear more guitar, which Hendrix was obviously famous for,” Propstore’s Mark Hochman told The Guardian. Experts say these variants are said to be superior to all others published so far, according to Hochman.
The auctioneer expects proceeds in the six-figure range for each of the four tapes. The demo of “Stone Free” alone was expected to bring in 200,000 British pounds (around 240,000 euros).
Invoices and strange documents go under the hammer
The material comes from the estate of Mike Jeffrey (1933-1973), Jimi Hendrix’s manager at the time. After Jeffrey’s death, it passed into the hands of his then secretary, Patricia Sullivan. She is now auctioning off the parts.
In addition to the tapes, other devotional items related to Jimi Hendrix will also go under the hammer. Medical bills that the auctioneers say were issued for drugs are being auctioned off. The bundle also includes the invoice for dry cleaning of costumes. It’s about a green jacket, a gold suit and orange pants – typical of Hendrix’s psychedelic style.
A note for Jimi Hendrix from his record company is particularly curious. She informs the rock star that he was kicked out of the apartment that belonged to Beatle Ringo Starr (84). He was too loud for the other tenants. The auction is scheduled to take place in London on November 15, 2024.
