Fashion magazine InStyle has come under fire after it allegedly “extremely retouched” Reese Witherspoon’s cover photo. The 45-year-old superstar hardly looks like herself, according to the magazine’s readers. The editor-in-chief, meanwhile, responded to the criticism.

The photo, taken by Australian photographer Emma Summerton, shows Witherspoon in a black dress and dark smokey eyes. But it’s not her styling that stands out, but her appearance. “Unrecognizable.” Or also: “Terribly retouched.” That is what readers of the magazine InStyle write on Twitter about the actress and film producer.
It must be said: in the photo on the cover of the magazine, Witherspoon’s face in particular looks slightly different than we are used to. Rounder, younger too.

Dozens of readers were quick to criticize the post-production on social media channels like Instagram and Twitter. “Has she approved this?” a reader asks. Another: “This is painful to watch. She is beautiful as she is in real life, leave her face alone. I thought it was her daughter.”
Meanwhile, editor-in-chief Laura Brown has responded to the criticism. She wrote: “You rarely see Reese like this, in sexy styling and heavily made up, and that was just the point.”
The actress herself also seems happy with the end result. She shared the photo on Instagram with the message: “Thank you for putting me on the cover.” Witherspoon added that she was flattered that someone was comparing her to her 22-year-old daughter Ava Phillippe. “I feel so young. I am so proud of her. I’m sure it’s not easy being exactly like your mother,” she said of her daughter in the magazine’s cover interview, which will be on sale November 19.
