The mycobacterium that causes the disease lives only inside the cells. Once in the external environment, the causative agent of leprosy dies. This prevents the spread of a terrible disease, but, unfortunately, makes it difficult to study it. It is still not known for sure what determines the duration of the incubation period, what factors affect the body’s susceptibility to leprosyand there is no vaccine for this disease.
