What does “the two of us who got lost side by side on purpose” mean?
IU and V revealed a movie-like story.
Resistance to hatred is poetically sublimated through IU’s new song ‘Love wins all’ music video. The music video, which has various symbols hidden throughout, begins with a scene where IU and V are running away from an unidentifiable square box.
After escaping from ‘Nemo’ and reaching a ruined space, the two soon spend a happy time watching each other with a camcorder and eating delicious food. Wearing a wedding dress and tuxedo, dancing and having a time of joy that seems like it will never end.
But Nemo’s attack came again. They try to run away from this once again, but the two eventually accept reality. At the end of the music video, the two people’s bodies disappeared, leaving only the wedding dress and tuxedo they were wearing.
While there are many different interpretations of the long-lingering music video, director Eom Tae-hwa, who directed it, said, “In the music video, ‘Nemo’, which persistently pursues IU, who is deaf, and V, who is blind, shows discrimination against the main characters. It means. It also looks like a smartphone screen that has become a conduit for writing various unrefined words, or a frame of prejudice and hatred. Furthermore, it can be interpreted to mean various types of discrimination and oppression that are prevalent in our daily lives.”
There are many symbols in this music video, which can be interpreted as ‘the survival story of a dystopian worldview of someone who cannot speak and sees the world only through his left eye.’ If you look closely at IU’s lips, you can see a small chain hanging from it. Leedam, the agency, said, “This means that there is difficulty in fully communicating with the world.” Come to think of it, V also attracted attention by wearing a white lens on his left eye, symbolizing the difficulty of full communication.
So what is the meaning of the camcorder that two people were filming each other with?
The time background in the video is the present, but the settings on the screen captured by the camcorder are of a world that was fine before it became ruins. The lens of a camcorder means the filter of love and can be seen as an important device that allows us to look at beautiful things in the world beyond the inner or outer appearances of people.
In the world of the camcorder, they look lively and neat rather than messy like in reality, eat beautifully prepared delicious food, and confidently move through many spaces in shiny dresses and tuxedos, enjoying the happiness they have only imagined.
Regarding the scene where the bodies are eventually destroyed by the ‘squares’ and only the ‘clothes’ they were wearing remain, Lee Dam said, “This means that they can escape from all kinds of oppression and pressure and fly freely. “Dresses and tuxedos falling from the sky also imply the question of whether forms that are considered meaningful and important in reality really show the true essence,” he said.

Director Eom Tae-hwa said, “As the worldview itself is a heterogeneous and abstract setting unlike reality, we also welcome various interpretations of the music video.” What do you think?
