Suspense
They sometimes held a whole country in suspense. In some cases, their media coverage has gone far beyond borders. This is the case of the terrifying drift of the sect of the guru Paul Mackenzie in Kenya – a case of which we have not yet grasped all the springs. Day after day, investigators searching the Shakahola forest, not far from Mombasa, unearth the bodies of new victims, which already number in the hundreds.
Less deadly, but just as publicized, and fascinating in many ways, the Thabo Bester case continues to fascinate South Africa and beyond: how did this serial rapist and murderer manage to fake his own death and escape, in May 2022? Investigators have managed to put the pieces of the puzzle together and bring to light an incredible chain of complicity.

How the couple that form Could Jean-Claude Lacote and Hilde Van Acker escape Belgian justice for twenty years before being arrested in Abidjan in 2019? How did the Malian police apprehend a serial killer, who, since 2018, beheaded his victims and sowed terror in the locality of Fana? In Senegal, it is another type of story that has delighted the media: that of Boy Djinné, a young delinquent imprisoned for theft, banditry and criminal association, who has managed to escape so many times that the prison administration has found himself ridiculed.
These crimes have sometimes been overshadowed by turbulent political news. Yet these stories fascinate by what they say about the society in which they take place. They also allow us to know a little more about the investigative methods of the African police.
