Unpublished photo released by NASA shows “violent process” of energy in the center of the Milky Way

An image released by Nasa shows the center of the Milky Way full of energy going through a process described as “violent” by one of the researchers. The photo was created over decades of studies to determine the energy flow that occurs in the galaxy.

The research published in the magazine Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society shows a panorama with photos from NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory and the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. “The galaxy is like an ecosystem. We know that the centers of galaxies are where the action is and play a huge role in their evolution,” explained astronomer Daniel Wang of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

According to the researchers, one of the highlights of the photo is an X-ray wire known as G0.17-0.41, which may be responsible for the flow of energy in the Milky Way and answer questions about the evolution of the universe. “This is evidence of an ongoing magnetic field reconnection event,” Wang also said. “It’s a violent process,” he added. “Such reconnection events are likely to be common when flux tubes of antiparallel magnetic fields collide and/or twist,” the article describes.
