Unpredictable Updates: Rumors Surrounding the iPhone SE 4 Release

Apple is much more unpredictable when it comes to iPhone SE updates than it is with new editions of the high-end iPhone line, or even new models of the iPad and iPad Pro.

Rumors and reports about the company’s next budget device have varied widely over the past year or so, both in terms of capabilities and timing of its release.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE, which was initially expected by many newsmakers and insiders already this year with a design inspired by the iPhone XR, has gradually slipped further and further back recently (and semi-until recently) in a number of forecasts that also increasingly confidently point to a more modern appearance.

The latest such prediction comes from an anonymous source cited by MacRumors who has basically no idea when Apple might be planning to unveil the iPhone SE 4, despite reportedly knowing a lot about the company’s intentions regarding the phone’s features and appearance. .

There are a lot of major developments in the pipeline

If this source is correct (which is obviously a big “if”), then the next-gen iPhone SE will still look a lot like the iPhone 14, rather than taking cues from the much older (and arguably uglier) iPhone XR design elements, as was most recently rumored just this week.

The iPhone SE 4 probably won’t look like the 2018 iPhone XR (pictured) after all

Of course, this isn’t the first time an iPhone 14 clone theory has been circulating online, and in fact, this latest MacRumors report is eerily similar to what we heard from a Twitter X.com tipster last month.

Among other things, we are talking about an OLED panel from the iPhone 14, which will probably replace the rather modest LCD screen of the 2022 iPhone SE 3, the most modern Face ID technology instead of the “outdated” Touch ID fingerprint reader, the obligatory USB Type- From port C, and what is perhaps most exciting, from the practical Action button borrowed from the brand new iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models.

The latter update still seems unlikely to us, given that the “regular” iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, which arguably have a nicer overall design than the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, lack the new Action button that the iPhone SE 4 it can be a completely unexpected and highly unusual advantage in the comfort and functionality departments.

On the other hand, the fourth-generation iPhone SE is also expected to get a single 48-megapixel camera on the back, which would be an important step up from its predecessor’s 12-megapixel rear camera, but it falls short of the performance and versatility of the iPhone 15’s dual 48 + 12-megapixel camera system.

The “when” part of the equation is still a big question mark

Let’s be honest, no one seems to know what Apple’s plans are for the iPhone SE 4 launch. It is even conceivable that the device will never be commercially available.

Now we have no idea when the sequel to the Apple iPhone SE 3 (pictured) will be released.

The company is said to be using the phone purely as an internal test platform for an in-house 5G modem, which we know Apple has been working on for years, but has never gotten very good at, and is constantly relying on its long-standing Qualcomm partnership.

But an inside source has it that the Cupertino tech giant is considering several (slightly) different designs and is actively developing “at least five” of them, which strongly suggests that Apple aims to introduce the iPhone SE 4 sooner or later.

Whether the aforementioned Apple-made 5G modem will be included in the final version of the fourth-generation iPhone SE is obviously still to be seen… just like nothing else about the device, if you think about it. But at least we know that Apple has significantly more ambitious plans for it than repeating the aesthetics of the iPhone XR from five years ago.
