Unprecedented Warmth: September Brings a Heat Wave Surpassing Last Summer’s Hottest Days

Sep 11, 2023 at 2:02 p.m

Today, locally tropical temperatures reached our country for the seventh day in a row. And that in September. The maximum temperatures of the exceptionally warm autumn week also far exceed the seven hottest days of last summer.

Yet it was also warm last summer. It was even one of the ten warmest summers since 1901. According to the KNMI, the temperature in June, July and August was almost one degree higher than the average over the past thirty years. The real heat this year was in the first month of summer.

But if we add up the maximum temperatures in De Bilt from the past seven days, they easily exceed the temperatures of the hottest summer week. The hottest days of last summer fell between June 9 and 15. In De Bilt the maximum temperatures then reached an average of 28.3 degrees. Temperatures between September 5 and 11 were at least 1.2 degrees higher, to an average of 29.5 degrees.

That is a very remarkable difference when you consider that the sun is at its maximum high in the sky in June. Now the day length is again close to the annual average. The significant difference in solar radiation is reflected in the night temperatures. These are slightly lower in this exceptionally warm September period than in the warmest week of June.

With all people in their thirties, several places in our country are also experiencing a regional heat wave. To achieve this, it must be warmer than 25 degrees at an official weather station for seven days in a row. And on three of those seven days the tropical limit of 30 degrees must be reached.

Just like in June, there is once again a national heat wave this September. The measurements at the De Bilt weather station are leading for this. There it became warmer than 30 degrees ‘only’ twice and the temperature remained a few tenths of a degree below the tropical limit value several times.
