Unprecedented Victory for People’s Party in Cordovan Municipal Elections

The ballot boxes have painted the Cordovan territory blue this Sunday. In an unprecedented turn, the People’s Party It has become the main political reference in the province after decades of PSOE hegemony. Driven by the euphoria transmitted by the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, a leader who right now seems to have no ceiling and who in recent days has not stopped supporting mayors of the towns of Córdoba, the popular ones won not only in Córdoba capital, but they are consolidating fiefdoms such as Cabra, Priego de Córdoba and Pozoblanco and, what is more important, they claim victory in municipalities where until recently it seemed impossible, such as the cases of Lucena, Puente Genil and Palma del Río, this the latter with an overwhelming majority.

The x-ray that the ballot boxes leave in the province is the following. At stake there was 909 minutes. Adolfo Molina’s PP became the first political force, with victory in 32 localities, a total of 162,627 votes (40.58% of the total) and the achievement of 355 council seats. Rafi Crespín’s PSOE, therefore, falls to second force. It achieves a total of 119,336 ballots (29.78% of the total), wins in 31 locations and achieves, in general calculation, 347 councilors, according to official data from the Ministry of the Interior with 100% scrutiny.

The PP lived a exultant night and, as the scrutiny progressed, the victories fell on his side, one by one. The most awaited was the one achieved in Lucena, the most populous municipality in Córdoba after the capital. After a quarter of a century in the hands of the PSOE, the popular Aurelio Fernández achieves ten councilors (he had six), surpassing the PSOE of Juan Pérez, who remains at six councilors. Ciudadanos maintains its two seats in the municipal plenary session, like Vox. Fernández will be, therefore, the new mayor of Lucena, as he himself had been warning: “The city is impatiently experiencing political change.”

In Genil Bridge, Sergio Velasco’s popular also scored a victory, although in this case the nine councilors achieved seem insufficient compared to the block on the left, which has 11 (the seven from Esteban Morales’s PSOE and the four achieved by IU). The only record achieved by Vox will not be decisive. Now, foreseeably, a negotiation process will be opened in the left bloc full of unknowns until practically June 17, the day of the constitution of the new city councils.

Meanwhile in Priego de Cordoba, Goat y whitewell the PP wins again without surprises, one of the headlines of the day came from Palma del Río, where the popular Matilde Esteo, in her first elections as number one on the iron, defeated the PSOE for the first time in an unprecedented victory, with an unexpected absolute majority (12 councilors against six).

The PP also wins in route, where the president of the Provincial Council, Antonio Ruiz, will lose the Mayor’s Office, a very symbolic defeat for the Socialists. Castro del Río, La Rambla, Bujalance, Hinojosa del Duque, El Carpio or Luque also lean in the balance towards the popular side, which remains in Cañete de las Torres, Añora or Villanueva del Duque.

The icing on the cake for the PP awaited in Saint Sebastian of the Ballesteroswhere Francisco Javier Maestre becomes the mayor with the most votes in the province, with 84.74% of the votes and all the councilors in the Plenary, a total of seven.

A PSOE in crisis

In what situation is, therefore, the PSOE of Rafi Crespín? Despite the 347 councilors achieved in the province as a whole – only eight fewer than the PP – the wear and tear is evident, as evidenced by the fact that they have lost key and highly symbolic mayoralties. the montillano raphael flames He remains as the main authority of the party, with ten councilors and the possibility of adding an absolute majority with the support of Izquierda Unida, as in his first term; He thus resisted against the former Police Commissioner Federico Cabello de Alba, who nevertheless achieved an excellent result for the popular, with eight councilors.

One of the few joys of the night for the PSOE came from Brothers, where María Jesús Serrano has won the popular Cristina Piernagorda, who becomes one of the few failures in the ranks of Adolfo Molina. The PSOE will also return to the Villanueva de Córdoba Mayor’s Office, which the popular Gabriel Duque has not managed to maintain after the departure of his predecessor, Dolores Sánchez, to the Junta. Posadas, Benamejí, Villafranca, Fuente Obejuna, Adamuz, Iznájar, Moriles, Espejo, Belalcázar, Belmez; Pedro Abad, El Viso, Almedinilla, Monturque or Guadalcázar are other towns where the PSOE wins, as well as Montorowhere Lola Amo obtains the absolute majority.

One of the main unknowns left by election night is Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, where the PSOE wins but the governability of the City Council will be complicated: the Socialists add seven councilors; five the PP; two, the group of voters Sí Peñarroya, of the current mayor, José Ignacio Expósito; two UI and one Vox. Arithmetic forces negotiations.

There are also questions about what can happen in santaella, where the PSOE wins with five councilors but the Plenary is practically divided into three; Somos Así achieves four councilors and the PP obtains two minutes.

United Left and its confluences –We make Córdoba in the capital– resist as a third force. They counted 58,976 votes (14.71% of the total) and won in nine municipalities, up to 128 councilors. IU remains firm in several towns in the so-called red countryside, such as Montalbán, Aguilar de la Frontera, Fernán Núñez or Nueva Carteya. They also expire in Fuente Palmera, Almodóvar del Río, Carcabuey and Fuente Carreteros; along the way they leave the mayoralties of Cardeña and Villaralto, where the PP wins.

The other big headlines of the day are starring citizens y Vox. The former because they disappear from all the plenary meetings in the province except Lucena, and therefore, they are on the verge of political death, swept from the Cordovan institutional board. And the latter substantially improve the results of the previous municipal ones, when they obtained 16,349 votes and five councilors. Vox is installed as the fourth political force, although the satisfaction is not complete because they do not achieve any mayoralty. They add 27,603 votes (6.88% of the total) and achieve 18 minutes councillorships.

On the other hand, a handful of five towns remain in the hands of independent political parties. In river villageUnited would obtain the Mayor’s Office after defeating the PSOE; hornachuelos it remains in the hands of the independents of the GIH; in The victory the Vamos group wins again; in the pebble wins CIDG, while in montemayorFinally, the group of voters Contigo, of the mayor Antonio García, revalidates the absolute majority with eight councilors.
