This is an unprecedented strike in the emblematic automobile sector. For the first time, the industry union (UAW) is simultaneously targeting three major manufacturers in the United States: Ford, General Motors and Stellantis (group resulting from the merger between Peugeot-Citroën and Fiat-Chrysler). As of Friday morning, one plant from each of these three companies was paralyzed in Missouri, Ohio and Michigan. The union threatens broader actions if it does not win its case.
UAW is demanding a salary increase of around 40% and an end to the austerity measures decided during the 2008 financial crisis. The American automobile industry was then on the verge of bankruptcy. It had restructured but also received federal aid. In exchange, the employees agreed to freeze salaries and cut back on their benefits.
