Tomatoes witnessed an unprecedented rise in their trading and offering prices in local markets, which raised many questions and speculation about the main reasons for this large jump in prices, and the expected timing for things to return to normal.
Others are expected to decline again at the latest, at the beginning of next October, to return to their normal levels of prices.
It is known that Tomato crop It is one of the crops that cannot be stored and quickly spoils. Moreover, tomato products that are offered during times of high prices are produced in agricultural greenhouses and their production costs are double and greater than the costs of normal agriculture. This explains the rise in tomato prices at times of the end of the season.
It is noteworthy that Egypt is one of the five largest countries that produce tomatoes in the world, as we grow approximately half a million acres of tomatoes annually in 3 main crops: the summer crop, the winter crop, and the Nile crop. These crops produce more than 7 million tons annually, of which we export about 3% in quantities of up to 140 thousand tons every year.
49% of the tomato area is grown in the summer grove, which plants its seedlings in “February, March, April, and May” and produces its fruits from June until August, and 9% is grown in the indigo grove, which plants its seedlings in June and July and produces its fruits in October, November, and December.
It is worth noting that tomatoes are grown in Egypt in overlapping crops throughout the year, with the winter season representing 42% of the cultivated area of tomatoes, whose seedlings are planted in September and October and produce their fruits in January, February and March.
