Unprecedented Power Game at Ajax: Michael van Praag in the Spotlight

There is currently an ‘unprecedented power game’ going on at the top of the board at Ajax, Valentijn Driessen writes in his column for The Telegraph. The leading role in this ‘trench war’ is reserved for Michael van Praag, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam team.

After a disastrous week, in which Alex Kroes was suspended and Ajax was defeated 6-0 in the Classic, Ajax finds itself in a ‘snake pit’, Driessen knows. A large part of the influential board, which holds 73 percent of the shares, supports the inactive Kroes and therefore disagrees with Van Praag.

“Many association members believe that Van Praag Kroes was unfairly dismissed quickly. And that he unfairly holds a hand over Annette Mosman, Cees van Oevelen and Georgette Schlick, while they have plunged Ajax into total chaos in all areas. In addition to the sporting decline, it is also about the organizational and financial decline,” the column reads.

Driessen states that the three have failed ostentatiously at Ajax, but that Van Praag refuses to show them the door. “While the trio, with the already departed Pier Eringa and Jan van Halst, is partly responsible for, among other things, the appointment of Sven Mislintat, Maurits Hendriks, stock magician Alex Kroes, the expenditure of 115 million euros on transfers for third-rate players – see Feyenoord-Ajax – and two loans (forty million euros) to have sufficient liquidity to pay the bills this season,” he says.

Driessen compares the current situation with a situation during the Velvet Revolution. “Many club members want Kroes back, but Van Praag wants to quickly move on to a new director, because Kroes was busy kicking down sacred cows. An important role in this whole power game at the top at Ajax is played by board chairman Ernst Boekhorst,” says the journalist, who concludes with the words: “That is the snake pit of Ajax in which no one is sure of his life.”
