Unprecedented Freedom and Film Inspiration: Becoming a Double Agent in Starfield

The sky is not the limit in Starfield as Bethesda seems to be giving players unprecedented freedom. Developers Will Shen and Emil Pagliarulo talked about how the filmography of actor Al Pacino helps the Starfield quests.

In a recent Q&A session with two members of the Bethesda development team, one fan asked:Can you be a double agent in the game?» Pagliarulo. studio design director, said:Ha! That’s exactly what you can do – infiltrate the Crimson Fleet for UC SysDef! It belongs to this questline».

It’s actually part of a deep quest, but the inspiration for it lies directly in Pagliarulo’s love of cinema.

“In the studio, I was (half-jokingly) accused of referring to films that some people have never seen because I am old. So with this particular storyline, the inspiration came from the movie Donnie Brasco, which is the true story of an FBI agent infiltrating the mafia.”

In Mike Newell’s crime opus Donnie Brasco, an FBI agent played by Johnny Depp infiltrates the Mafia’s underworld and is taken under his wing by hitman Lefty Ruggiero (Pacino). This is an exceptional crime film and also one of the best thrillers to watch.

As for the quest itself, Shen, lead quest designer for the game, adds that “all playable factions can be played independently“. Shen elaborates that in order to become the ultimate space spy, players will go deep undercover to steal information from the game’s key figures:

“The Crimson Fleet storyline shows that you are an undercover agent within the fleet on behalf of UC SysDef (a specific military unit of the United Colonies), but whether you betray the Navy or UC SysDef is a choice you will have to make.”

The prospect of becoming the most ruthless double agent in the galaxy is exciting, but it will most likely lead to our character meeting a sad end.
