Unlocking Performance: Running Steam and Windows Games on ARM with WINE and DXVK – A Game Changer for Gaming on Budget SBCs

A year ago I played around with x86 to ARM, also in conjunction with WINE and DXVK, and every time I am amazed at what kind of performance the system is still able to deliver.

That was especially the case on RK3399, mainly the memory (4GB) was limiting here and the CPU is not a powerhouse, but I still managed to install Steam and GoG games and run, both native Linux games and Windows games under WINE. Simple games like Celeste ran almost flawlessly. Now imagine this on hardware that has more computing power than a 30 euro SBC .

The user experience is not bad either, once the emulation layer is installed it just works. This can be easily introduced as standard on ARM devices, the user hardly notices the difference with native.

I also have a Phytium, which unfortunately has a few quirks, but should be able to play 3D games well with its 16GB RAM, decent CPU and RX 550.
