The current world is certainly not ideal in many respects, but one of its features will probably be fondly remembered by investors for years to come. And that for a climate of high yields. When the year 2025 is written, for example, and inflation shows half a second percent, people in pubs will show their account statements from 2023 and marvel together at how incredibly high interest they collected. Because the memory of savers, investors and voters is short. And because in 2025 the CNB will have a rate of three percent (yes, I’m only drawing from the editorial crystal ball) and interest on savings accounts will thus be around two percent, roughly a third of the current level. It may serve as a psychological shield against inflation, but that’s the end of it. The winners at that time will be those who disrupted the properties of space-time and managed to transfer the past at least in some way into the future. In other words, they earn the same as they did in the era of high interest rates.
Fixing a high interest rate is understandably not a trivial process. No bank will go suicidal against itself and keep a high interest rate longer than necessary. Domestic banks in particular are far too pragmatic for that. Fixing the yield on bonds is of course also an option. But a few investors have already done that, and some bonds are simply quite expensive. So their yield is no longer as sexy as it was even a year ago.
And so there may be a way that is not entirely related to the setting of interest rates and the level of inflation, but it can serve just as well, or even better. That is, dividend stocks. Some of the American ones yield over eight percent. The assumption of dividend stability is understandably tricky, but it doesn’t have to be unrealistic. In addition, shares can understandably appreciate, and the investor will then add up the income from dividends and share price growth.
