Unlock Hidden Features: How to Connect Your Apple Watch to Your Mac

【Apple Watch Hacks_13】

Apple Watch users are familiar with the ability to link with an iPhone, but did you know that it can also work with a Mac depending on the settings? In this article, we will introduce two settings and operations that you should remember when using the link function between Apple Watch and Mac.

1. Control music and videos with the “Remote Control” app

If you are already using an Apple Watch, you probably know that you can easily control the songs playing on your iPhone from your Apple Watch. Similarly, you may have wondered, “Is it possible to control the music being played on a Mac?”

In fact, it is partially possible to control the music being played on your Mac using your Apple Watch. By using the Apple Watch’s “Remote” app, you can control the songs being played in the Mac’s “Music” app from your Apple Watch.

As an example of the necessary setting steps, first open the “Remote control” app on your Apple Watch and tap the “+” button at the top left of the screen. A 4-digit number will now appear on your watch screen.

▲Open the “Remote” app on Apple Watch and tap “+” at the top left of the screen. Display a 4-digit number

Next, launch the “Music” app on your Mac. Click on the sidebar on the left side of the window where you’ll see your Apple Watch’s device name, such as “Apple Watch of…”. A screen will appear asking you to enter a 4-digit number, so enter the number that was displayed on your watch earlier. A screen will appear asking for permission to connect, so click “Allow” to complete the connection.

▲Launch the “Music” app on your Mac and select Apple Watch displayed in the sidebar. Enter your 4-digit number

▲When this screen appears, click “Allow” to complete preparations.

Once you have completed this setting, you will be able to change the volume etc. using the Remote app on your Apple Watch while playing music using the Music app on your Mac. It may be used less frequently than the iPhone, but it’s worth checking out.

▲If you open the “Remote” app while playing music on your Mac’s “Music” app, you can use the Digital Crown to adjust the volume, advance songs, etc.

2. Easily unlock your Mac with Apple Watch!

In addition, if you enable a certain setting, under certain conditions, simply opening your Mac while wearing your Apple Watch will not allow you to enter a password or unlock using Touch ID (fingerprint authentication). It will automatically unlock automatically. Very useful in environments without Touch ID.

Setup is very easy. For Macs running macOS Ventura or later, click the “Touch ID & Passcode” field (or “Security & Privacy” if the OS is an older version) from the “System Settings” screen, and select “Apple Watch”. ” switch. Next, enter the password set on your Mac to authenticate the settings change.

▲ Select “System Settings” from the Apple logo on the menu bar

▲ Under “Touch ID & Password” turn on “Use Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac”

▲Enter your password to allow settings changes and you’re done.

Now, with your Apple Watch on and unlocked, open your Mac. “Unlocking with Apple Watch…” will be displayed on your Mac’s screen, and your Mac will be unlocked automatically.

▲When I opened a locked Mac while wearing my Apple Watch, the message “Unlocking with Apple Watch…” was displayed at the bottom of the screen.

By the way, in addition to these, there is also a function that allows you to approve Apple Pay with the side button of the Apple Watch when shopping in Safari.

However, in my experience, there are a limited number of websites where this feature can be used, and even if the website supports Apple Pay, the feature may not always work, so I would like to introduce this feature. I’ll leave it as an introduction. If you’re interested, check out the features in detail.
