This news comes after Britain and South Africa reported a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is believed to be more contagious. This new threat raises restrictions traveling in some countries, and market volatility.

“This new variant is different from that found in England and South Africa,” said the Director CDC Africa, John Nkengasong in a virtual conference from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Thursday (24/12).
“New variant detection at Nigeria and South Africa is forcing the African CDC to hold an important meeting, “he added.

The news broke when Covid cases were surging in Nigeria and South Africa. In the past week, Nigeria reported a 52 percent increase in cases, and South Africa 40 percent.
Nkengasong said, currently there is no evidence that the new variant of Covid has contributed to the increase in transmission of the Corona virus in Nigeria. However, he warned, Nigeria’s genomic surveillance was much less than that of Britain.
