Four goals and three saved/missed penalties. In terms of spectacle value, KAA Gent – Standard did not disappoint in the least. The Buffaloes whirled past the visitors in the first half with goals from Cuypers and Tissoudali, but especially had to thank goalkeeper Davy Roef. The penalty phenomenon stopped two eleven meters from Kanga.
KAA Gent – Standard in a nutshell:
Key moment: In the final phase, Standard sees an opportunity when Hjulsager commits a penalty violation on Djenepo. Despite his earlier penalty miss, Kanga goes behind the ball again, but he messes it up again. No tying goal for Standard, no pressing finish. Man of the match: What a match from Davy Roef. The goalkeeper once again lived up to his name as a penalty stopper. He managed to parry Kanga’s penalty twice. His other rescues were also worth seeing. He only had no chance with Kanga’s goal. Striking: Standard has now been unable to win eight league matches in a row against KAA Gent. The last time this worked was on May 8, 2021 at Sclessin. Since then, it has lost five times against Ghent and drawn twice. For a Liège victory in Ghent, we even have to go back to April 3, 2019.
Unleashed KAA Gent blows Standard away
A penalty after just two minutes. The match couldn’t have started much better for KAA Gent, but Hugo Cuypers aimed the penalty weakly at Bodart. The tone had been set. Ghent resolutely took command and Arnaud Bodart kept Standard afloat when Kandouss headed from close range.
Halfway through the first half, Standard also received a penalty after VAR intervention. However, Kanga was ill in the same bed as Cuypers and Davy Roef once again lived up to his reputation as a penalty stopper.
Around the half hour mark, Ghent pushed the accelerator a little deeper. Bodart was able to parry attempts by Hong and Tissoudali, but in the end the Standard goalkeeper scored. On a headed corner, Tarik Tissoudali worked the ball into the goal via Fossey: 1-0.
The spell was broken and barely three minutes later it was already 2-0. On a pass from star Brown, Cuypers made up for his penalty miss with a striking header. Even before half time, an unleashed Ghent made it 3-0. After a clever feint, Tissoudali gave Bodart the lead again.
Roef prevents an exciting ending with a second penalty save
In the second half Standard tried to make something of it. Both Kanga and Sowah tested Roef, but he did not budge. Halfway through the second half, the Ghent goalkeeper had to give in when Kanga nonchalantly punished De Sart’s loss of ball.
Despite the comfortable lead, Ghent still got hot in the final phase. Roef prevented the tying goal on a Vanheusden header and once again emerged as a penalty hero when Kanga botched a penalty for the second time.
Ghent escaped a nail-biting ending and after four league games without a win, they are again victorious. For Standard, an unbeaten run of seven games comes to an end.
Vanhaezebrouck: “The best we have already delivered this season”
Hein Vanhaezebrouck (trainer KAA Gent): “The first half was the best we have had this season. They had two great chances in gift wrapping, but otherwise they were not in our box. That is a shame, because without Roef, you may be behind. If they score their first penalty, you will have a completely different match. Our first half was a reference, but still with that point of attention. They were not smart actions with those penalty violations, especially because they were not dangerous situations Roef was one of the standouts, the only pity is that he conceded a goal. Hong was also fantastic in the first half, the whole team was very good then. Brown played another top match, that was also a long time ago. Samoise was also very good on the right flank, because Djenepo is not the least. In fact, Samoise made it more difficult for Djenepo than the other way around.” Carl Hoefkens (Standard trainer): “There was too little of everything in the first half. There was a lack of pure commitment, too little passion, too little pride in the duels. The second balls were never for us. When we got the ball we were not dominant enough and had difficulty keeping the ball in the team. It was a very frustrating first half, but I am very happy with the response in the second half. If we want to compete for the places at the top of the table, Then these are games in which we have to do better. If Kanga’s second penalty goes in, it could be a different story. Then it is still 12 minutes with the score 3-2 and then it can become very exciting. But we failed to do that. I don’t blame him for kicking twice. He is responsible for the penalties and if he feels confident, then he should do it. I want players to take that responsibility and they can then make the wrong to do things.” Tarik Tissoudali (KAA Gent): “The intensity was comparable to the match against Club Brugge, but we played through it more easily and we showed great things with the ball. It was one of our best matches. These are fun matches to play, it was also fun for the spectators. Two football teams and an open match, those are the best matches. I am happy that I was able to help the team and that we got the three points after a long period without a win in the competition. In the second half it was a mental issue. You are 3-0 up, you don’t want to concede goals. We also did not take advantage of the opportunities we were given. I am happy for Roef, because he came from far comes. I hope this will give him confidence.” second half, minute 96. End. KAA Gent takes victory again after four games without a win. Thanks to dazzling football with three goals in the first half and penalty stopper Davy Roef, they keep the points at home. For Standard, an unbeaten run of seven games comes to an end. .
