Unknowns blow up high voltage pylon next to the highway

An unknown perpetrator fell a high-voltage pylon in Gland in the canton of Vaud on Friday, apparently with explosives. The federal prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal investigation.

According to the cantonal police on Friday evening, at around 10.50 a.m., motorists informed them that a high-voltage pylon was on the ground near the Lausanne-Geneva motorway, just before Gland towards Geneva.

Several police patrols and investigators from the security police quickly went to the site, and investigators from the Federal Office of Police (fedpol) soon arrived. The first investigations showed that it was sabotage and that the unknown perpetrators probably used explosives.

No loss of supply

The area was cordoned off for security. The traffic on the highway was not affected. Because of the probable use of explosives, the federal prosecutor opened a criminal investigation against unknown persons. The police are looking for witnesses.

The two affected 220 kV lines Banlieue Ouest-Foretaille and Crans-Romanel are out of operation and grounded, the national network company Swissgrid said on Friday evening. Network stability is guaranteed and there are no supply failures in the transmission network. The planning of the repair work has already started.
