Fraudsters have once again stolen money from senior citizens via WhatsApp, this time in Neubrandenburg. The police warn urgently.
Neubrandenburg
A 71-year-old woman from Neubrandenburg was cheated by criminals for almost 4,000 euros. The police headquarters in Neubrandenburg announced on Wednesday that she had received a WhatsApp message from her supposed daughter that her cell phone was broken and she was using the new number to get in touch. The senior immediately saved the new number and deleted her real daughter’s number.
Shortly thereafter, she was asked to make transfers for her daughter, the police reconstructed the process. First 995, then 1390, then 1490 euros. The senior had transferred all sums. In the afternoon, the fraudsters demanded the fourth transfer, but now the elderly woman preferred to ask her daughter directly. The scammers did not answer the call, police said. The 71-year-old then did not make the last transfer, but lost a total of 3,875 euros. “When she told her husband about it in the evening, the fraud was recognized,” concludes the police.
Police: Say a code word!
The investigators assumed that the scammers would continue to try this scam and appealed to the population. “Please talk to your family about this. Make up a code word. If you receive such messages, dial the number of your relatives you already know and ask personally. Do not make any transfers before you have had personal contact, ”the police warn.
Attempts at fraud are currently increasing throughout eastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the beginning of the week, a 65-year-old from Ribnitz-Damgarten (West Pomerania-Rügen) lost 1,830 euros in the same scam. In this case, the alleged son had said that his phone had ended up in the washing machine and that he was therefore unable to make transfers. In Jördenstorf, on the other hand, a woman had not let herself be outwitted.
