Unknown disease kills 143 people in south-west DRC, local authorities say | Democratic Republic of the Congo

Mysterious Illness Claims Lives in Democratic Republic of Congo, Raising Global Concerns

A deadly and unidentified illness has swept through a remote region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving health officials scrambling for answers and raising concerns about a potential public health crisis. The outbreak, centered in the Panzi health zone of Kwango province, has claimed the lives of 143 people in just one month, with cases surging in November.

"The situation is extremely worrying as the number of infected people continues to rise," said Cephorien Manzanza, a local civil society leader, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Reports indicate that victims are experiencing flu-like symptoms, including debilitating headaches and high fever. Tragically, the lack of readily available medication and medical resources in the rural Panzi health zone has proven devastating. "Sick people died in their own homes for lack of treatment," said Remy Saki, the deputy governor of Kwango province, and Apollinaire Yumba, the provincial minister of health.

Adding to the worry, local epidemiologists report that women and children are bearing the brunt of the mystery illness.

While the cause remains unknown, a medical team has been dispatched to the affected area to collect samples and conduct vital analysis. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also been alerted and is working closely with Congolese health authorities to investigate the outbreak.

"The UN health agency had been alerted to the presence of the disease last week, and it was working alongside DRC’s public health ministry to make further investigations," a WHO spokesperson stated.

The outbreak echoes concerns over emerging infectious diseases that can rapidly spread across borders, as demonstrated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The international community will be watching closely as health officials race against time to identify the disease, contain its spread, and develop effective treatments.
