The 28th day of protests against the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus began with a previously announced march of students. Students at several universities took to the streets to protest the detention of dozens of their peers this week. In addition, the arrests occurred not only on the street, during the march, but also on university premises. Several teachers were also detained in an attempt to defend their students.
Today, students from several universities went on a joint march and the scenario developed the same as in previous days. On the street, students, mostly boys, began to be detained in civilian clothes and masks, as well as in uniformed army uniforms, placed on buses without identification signs. By the way, the Belarusian media emphasizes that people in such green forms on the streets of Minsk are new.
After the detention of the young people, one of the activists has addressed the university management via video, asking them to defend their students.
“We are asking you to give an opinion on this situation. We are asking for the support of the university management. We are asking you to defend us, your students, just as we were when we were detained and taken to Okrestino. We are asking for your help and your support. Please return our The detentions were not just brutal – they were inhumane. We, the fragile girls, went in chains so that our boys would not be collected. or social views. Here’s the question of whether we are human or not? ” so any of the students.
Shortly after the students’ protest, several thousand women also went on a peace march. This march was distinguished by the fact that it no longer showed only the white-red-white flags, but also the flags of various other countries. Flags of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Wales and other countries. In their posters, the participants of the campaign both thanked various countries for their support and called for its continuation, because there are still a lot of people in Belarus who need to open their eyes. Similar women’s marches have taken place in other Belarusian cities.
In the afternoon, it also became known that one of the members of the Presidium of the Opposition Coordination Council, Olga Kovalkova, had left for Poland. After several days in detention, she was unexpectedly released today and the decision to go to Poland was taken for fear of further repression by the authorities.
Yesterday, information technology workers gathered at the Minsk High Technology Park for a protest. The rally took place after the authorities searched one of the complex’s IT companies and detained several employees.
“PandaDoc is putting a lot of pressure on the IT company. It’s only a matter of time before it will be turned against other IT companies as well, because it is one of the most important industries in the country,” said the protester Tatiana.
Nikita Mikado, the founder of PandaDoc, had previously condemned the violent repression of the demonstrations, urged members of the force to disobey orders and promised to help if they were repressed.
Four employees of the company standing in August were arrested and charged with financial crimes. Mikado, the company’s founder, sees this as a political order. “The authorities are trying to influence me in such a humble way. Today they came to us, tomorrow they will come to you. You cannot stand by and remain silent while beating your friends and loved ones. Let’s be together, show that we are united,” Mikado said.
In recent years, Belarusian governments have sought to promote their IT industry in an effort to differentiate their economies. During the visit to the Minsk High Technology Park earlier this year, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also brought. The park employs 750 IT companies, which employ almost 60 thousand people and make up 6% of the country’s gross domestic product. The demonstrations have been joined by many workers in the industry, which does not rule out the possibility of leaving Belarus due to repression.
