Jakarta –
The police said that a University of Indonesia (UI) student with the initials AAB (23) from the start intended to steal and kill MNZ (19) to pay off debts. Before the murder was carried out, AAB had tried to drain the contents of the junior’s ATM.
“Why target the victim? Because the perpetrator and the victim are friends, and know that the victim knows he has items such as a Macbook brand laptop, has all kinds of iPhones,” said Depok Police Deputy Head of Criminal Investigation Unit AKP Nirwan Pohan in a press conference, Saturday (5/ 8/2023).
In addition, AAB knew that the victim had luxury goods and a lot of money. Plus, victims who also play crypto investments are considered more successful than perpetrators.
“Because this victim also plays investment games, he is more successful and maybe the victim is considered to have more money, so (the perpetrator thinks) by controlling the ATM, I can settle my debt (the perpetrator),” he explained.
Finally, AAB stole the victim’s wallet to take the ATM card. However, AAB continued to fail to access the victim’s ATM PIN.
“After taking it, the wallet was taken and tried to go to an ATM because they didn’t know the PIN was finally blocked,” he explained.
Nirwan said the perpetrator had intended to kill the victim since last Monday (31/7). At that time, the perpetrator knew that the victim had just returned from his hometown. The perpetrator even had time to learn how to kill through YouTube videos.
“It was already planned to kill the victim from Monday after the victim returned,” he said.
The MNZ murder took place at the victim’s boarding house on Wednesday (2/8). MNZ’s body was put in plastic and left in the boarding room. MNZ’s body was only found on Friday (4/8).
The police then arrested AAB and secured a number of items of evidence, such as a folding knife that was suspected of being used to kill up to a number of items that were allegedly stolen from the victim. AAB is suspected of murder because of debt.
