A horrifying murder of a great-grandmother, June Fox-Roberts, shocked the residents of Llantwit Fadre in November 2021, when a 26-year-old university student, Luke Deely, killed and decapitated her in her own home. The paranoid schizophrenic art student first bludgeoned June to death before going on to chop up her body and leaving her daughter to discover the gruesome murder scene. He had already left his university accommodation ten days prior to the act. Deeley has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act after pleading guilty to manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility. The forensic evidence shows that he used an axe, but not a chainsaw, to dismember June’s body. CCTV footage presented in court showed Deeley maniacally talking and singing to himself while carrying out the horrific ordeal. In the aftermath of the sentencing, June’s family expressed their profound shock and sorrow, stating that June was a hospitable woman who would never have hurt anyone. Her death has left a void in their hearts that will never be filled. This atrocious act serves as a reminder of the need to identify and address mental health issues with more urgency in our society.
