In the innovation output criterion, measuring growth in research output and patent applications, UST’s performance was particularly noteworthy. It surged to third place nationally, a dramatic improvement from its 12th-place ranking in 2023. Globally, this translated to a jump from 8,083rd to 4,875th.

UST also demonstrated significant improvement in research performance, climbing to eighth place nationally (7,100th globally) from 11th (7,209th globally) in 2023. This category evaluates the volume,impact,and quality of research outputs. The university’s progress in societal impact was equally notable, rising to fourth place nationally (2,015th globally) from eighth (5,118th globally). This ranking considers web presence, including pages, backlinks, and social media mentions.

The SCImago rankings encompass 19 subject areas, and UST achieved rankings in nine. The university’s leadership was particularly evident in several fields. UST led all Philippine institutions in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology; chemistry; and pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmaceutics, showcasing its strength in scientific research. It also secured second place nationally in agricultural and biological sciences and environmental science.

Further demonstrating its breadth of academic excellence,UST also achieved rankings in arts and humanities,psychology (4th),medicine (5th),and social sciences (7th). This diverse representation underscores the university’s commitment to a wide range of scholarly pursuits.

While the International Rice Research Institute retained its top spot in the Philippines, dropping to 2,971st globally from 1,431st, the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman followed at 3,151st globally, and the Department of Science and Technology at 3,344th. De La Salle University led among private institutions, placing 4,459th worldwide. UP Los Baños ranked sixth nationally (5,866th globally), followed by Ateneo de Manila University at 6,645th globally.

A total of 9,054 research institutions participated in the 2024 SCImago Institutions Rankings, including 15 from the Philippines. The rankings, compiled by scimago lab, a Spanish consulting firm specializing in scientometrics, scientific publications, and web visibility analysis, provide a valuable benchmark for research institutions worldwide.
