Given the fire at the solid waste landfill of the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Basin and Lake of Amatitlán (AMSA), the University of San Carlos of Guatemala has taken preventive measures to protect the health and safety of the university community.
In this sense, it is reported through a statement that all academic and administrative activities have been suspended in person for April 8 of this year, in the departments of Guatemala and Sacatepéquez, changing to virtual mode to the extent that its nature allows it.
“It is important to mention that the transition to the virtual modality will be supervised by the academic and administrative authorities, guaranteeing the continuity of the university’s activities,” he points out.
The authorities detail that this decision is based on the recommendations issued by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, as well as the reports provided by the Coordinator for Disaster Reduction and the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh ), which warn about air quality that currently represents a risk to the health of the population.
“In addition, the report presented by the Center for Safe Development and Disaster Studies of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala and the Disaster Commission of our institution has been considered, with the purpose of guaranteeing the integrity and well-being of the students, teachers , administrative staff and other collaborators,” they point out.
Finally, they urge the community to take measures to protect their health and safety. They recommend avoiding direct exposure to smoke, keeping windows closed, using air purifiers indoors if possible, and if you experience breathing difficulties or other symptoms related to smoke inhalation, they suggest seeking shelter in safe places and seeking medical assistance. immediately.
