University of Montreal History Department Partners with Collège de Rosemont to Encourage Student Success in History Studies

The History Department of the University of Montreal is joining forces with Collège de Rosemont to encourage students registered in the CEGEP’s History and Civilization program to pursue university studies.

This agreement offers many advantages. First, the department can credit up to two first-year courses toward the baccalaureate or major in history.

“We want to recognize the achievements of students who have a solid foundation in history, which avoids repeating courses that have already been passed. It gives them the opportunity to take an in-depth course instead, a second year course for example,” indicates Laure Sarah Ethier, student success advisor in the Department of History at UdeM, who piloted the improvement of the project.

Then, this agreement is based on educational activities offered by the University: conferences given at the College by professors and master’s or doctoral students to talk about their research, visits to the department, access to an online course module, attendance in a UdeM course.

“This kind of partnership is rather rare in humanities programs. But we realize that it facilitates the integration of students at the University. They arrive more confident and with some benchmarks,” notes Laure Sarah Ethier.

Promote academic perseverance

The History and Civilization program at the Collège de Rosemont, where the history of the Western world and ancient civilizations is taught, offers an archaeological excavation course in Northern Greece with Ariane Poulin, a teacher at the Collège. Participants then join an international team led by Jacques Y. Perreaultprofessor in the Department of History at UdeM, to uncover the remains of the ancient city of Argilos, a 2,500-year-old city located on the shores of the Aegean Sea.

To benefit from this gateway, however, you must have a certain average. “We believe that this bridge and the recognition of credits constitute an incentive to surpass oneself, to motivate oneself to obtain or maintain a good average. And in the end, both establishments, but also the students, benefit from it,” thinks Laure Sarah Ethier.

Note that a similar agreement with Collège Lionel-Groulx, in Sainte-Thérèse in the Laurentians, should soon see the light of day.

The little history of the agreement

It was in 2022 that the former director of the Department of History Jacques Y. Perreault set up the first version of the bridge with the Collège de Rosemont. The current director, Olivier Hubertand professor and manager of undergraduate programs Susan Dalton supported Laure Sarah Ethier in improving the current agreement.
