University of Lorraine Students Subjected to Far-Right Harassment Following Arrests

To fully understand, we have to go back to the end of December, the 22nd to be precise. That day, 5 medicine and dentistry students from the University of Lorraine were arrested. They were suspected of having links with the Islamist movement. They were also accused of having carried out reconnaissance on the Strasbourg Christmas market. A little later, the young people were released without any charges being brought against them. They were therefore able to return to school, like the other young people, on January 8.

At the time, the University of Lorraine wanted to reassure its student community by declaring that this return to school was taking place “with respect for their fundamental rights” and without any security problems.

A turbulent income

However, since the announcement of their custody, these 5 students have been singled out by Action Française, a political movement linked to the far right, explains Le Figaro. Since the start of the school year, collages with the slogan “terrorists/Islamists outside our universities” have appeared.

On January 23, seven members of Action Française entered a classroom and threw a packet of flour at one of the students arrested last December. “This action may seem innocuous, but the protest video broadcast by Action Française clearly shows the violence of this intrusion,” continued Hélène Boulanger, the president of the University.

The president announced that she would file a complaint following this attack which “disregards both the seriousness of the investigations carried out by the police and the principles of the rule of law”.
