University of Latvia professor caught in plagiarism • IR.lv

The long-time senator of the University of Latvia and full member of the Academy of Sciences, Māris Kļaviņš, was caught in plagiarism, but criminal proceedings were initiated for possible fraud in the project he led. This happened while he was the chairman of the university’s Constituent Assembly, writes the magazine And.

It is not the first time that the name of University of Latvia professor Māras Kļaviņš appears in the media due to a scandal. In 2019, under his leadership, the re-election of the re-election of the rector of the UL, Indrikis Muižnieks, took place. Two years later, Kliavins’ former student, Dmitrijs Poršinovs, made public information about a possible fraud in a research project led by Kliavins, financed with European Union money.

However, until now there has not been more widespread information about the fact that a work published in an international scientific journal, of which he is a co-author, was retracted due to plagiarism, and last September, following a complaint submitted by Poršņov, the Academic Ethics Commission of the University of Latvia found “elements containing plagiarism” in the work of Kļaviņš and his colleagues.

And investigates this case of plagiarism.
