At least three people have been killed in a shooting at a university in Las Vegas. One person is seriously injured but in stable condition in hospital. The shooter was killed by police.
Around noon local time, the first reports emerged of shots heard in one of the buildings at the University of Nevada complex. Later, shots were also heard at another building.
A major police action was initiated. Just after 12:30 p.m., police reported that a suspect had been located and was no longer alive. Nothing is known about the shooter’s motive.
Panic
The shooting caused panic among University of Nevada students, who described taking shelter in buildings on the university’s campus and hearing shots. Many students and staff locked themselves in classrooms.
“We were in a building with 200 students,” one student told CNN. “A lot of people were panicking.” They were led out by police with their hands up. “The windows were broken and there was glass everywhere.”
The shooting also affected Harry Reid International Airport near Las Vegas. Planes en route to the airport were temporarily denied permission to land and other flights were delayed.
In October 2017, Las Vegas was shocked by an attack on a festival, in which sixty people were killed. Hundreds of people were also injured. The gunman then opened fire on a crowd from a high-rise building.
