University News – The Chair of Crop Biostimulation is born for the promotion of profitable and sustainable agriculture

The new Chair is the result of the agreement signed between the UCO and SIPCAM Iberia.

This morning, the University of Córdoba and the multinational SIPCAM Iberia presented the new Chair of crop biostimulation for the promotion of profitable and sustainable agriculture. This initiative continues the work of more than a decade between both entities through experiences and tests in the use of new molecules in fertilization and carrying out tests on herbicides, fungicides and biostimulants, seeking to develop a more environmentally and economically sustainable agriculture through the use of new technologies.

The specific agreement for the creation of this new Chair was signed today by the rector of the UCO, Manuel Torralbo Rodríguez, and the country manager of SIPCAM Iberia, Xosé Lois Devesa Novo. The rector thanked the multinational, based in Valencia, for its trust in the UCO and in the staff of the Higher Technical School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering; while praising the dedication of the director of the Chair, Jesús Gil Ribes, for his dedication to the transfer of knowledge in the agricultural sector.

For his part, Xosé Lois Devesa Novo explained that this Chair gives continuity to the work with the UCO in the area of innovation in agriculture, “and it is not only an academic agreement, but also an open door to the future of innovation and research”. In this sense, he stressed the three key words surrounding the Chair: biostimulation, profitability and sustainability, as the axes of the Chair’s activities. The country manager of SIPCAM Iberia indicated that “the University of Córdoba is recognised as a pioneering entity in the agricultural sector” to successfully achieve the objectives set by the new Chair.

The director of the Chair, Jesús Gil Ribes, explained that the work that SIPCAM has been developing with the UCO for more than 15 years has been materialized in activities that have been linked to the UCO’s Rabanales Experimental Farm. These tasks have been financed through OTRI contracts, research projects (such as LIFE INNOCEREAL), and Chairs such as the one presented today and the previous one on Digital Transformation for Sustainable Agriculture, among other actions.

The main objective of the chair is to establish synergies between SIPCAM Iberia and the UCO to promote territorial, economic and social development, at a national level, in its field of action. It will be especially focused on the sustainability of crops and will be very focused on making agriculture more profitable and sustainable with the use of new products such as biostimulants.
