Historical Review of the Academic Palms
The academic palms were established in their current form by decree of October 4, 1955 by the President of the Republic René Coty. Their creation dates back to the First Empire with the decree of March 19, 1808 on the organization of the imperial university.
They are therefore the oldest distinction awarded exclusively for civilian purposes. He must be thirty-five to be knighted. To be promoted to officer or commander it is necessary, except in exceptional cases, to have served five years in the lower rank. Nominations take place twice a year.
