Universities – Rostock – University Rector: University needs the presence of students – education

Rostock (dpa / mv) – According to the Rector of the University of Rostock, Wolfgang Schareck, the university and studies are and will remain dependent on the personal presence of students. “It always means that all knowledge is available online. If you work it out, you will gain the same knowledge. That is definitely not true,” said Schareck of the German press agency after the experience of nine months of the corona pandemic. When developing the competence for self-organization, a basic requirement for academics, close and personal exchange with lecturers and fellow students is necessary.

Schareck assumes that classroom events or seminars can currently only be offered for a maximum of 20 percent of the 12,800 students. There are around 60 rooms for events in Rostock that comply with hygiene regulations. For examinations, for example, the exhibition hall is evaded. For students who have no WiFi at home or who live in the country, workplaces could be set up at the university.

The exchange with fellow students after the lecture over coffee or the short conversation with lecturers are irreplaceable, emphasized Schareck. “Otherwise the university experience will be lost.” One consequence is that more meeting places have to be set up at the university even after the pandemic.

When it comes to digital teaching and streaming, the university often encounters technical difficulties or data protection is often problematic, said the rector. However, there are also many elements in digital learning that have to be taken into the post-pandemic period. In this way, the world’s most competent personalities could easily be added and the repeatability, the storage options and the increase in knowledge are further advantages.
