Universities – Greifswald – Biology Professor Riedel new Rector of the University of Greifswald – Education

Greifswald (dpa / mv) – The University of Greifswald will continue to be headed by a woman in the future. The Academic Senate elected Katharina Riedel as the new rector on Wednesday. The biology professor succeeds Prof. Johanna Weber, whose term of office ends on March 31, 2021. The official handover will also take place on this day, the university announced in the evening.

Katharina Riedel has held the chair for microbiology in Greifswald since 2011. After studying biology at the Technical University of Munich, she received her doctorate there in 1998 and qualified as a professor at the University of Zurich in 2006. After working at the University of Braunschweig, she came to Greifswald, where she has been Vice Rector for Research and Transfer as well as International Affairs and Equality since 2017.

After her election as future rector, Riedel announced the establishment of a technology pool for her first year in office in order to improve the conditions for digital teaching. In addition, she wants to streamline the examination system.
