Universities – Göttingen – Despite the Abitur break 3300 new students at the University of Göttingen – Education

Göttingen (dpa / lni) – Although there are far fewer high school graduates from Lower Saxony this year, 3300 new students have enrolled at the University of Göttingen. The university announced that the total number of students would remain more or less constant. It has almost 30,000 students, 4,800 of whom enrolled for the 2020/2021 winter semester. The number of first-year students decreased by just under 18 percent compared to the previous year, while there were almost 70 percent fewer high school graduates in Lower Saxony.

Due to the return to the Abitur after 13 years, only just under 10,000 pupils across the country successfully passed the Abi exams in 2020. These were mostly repeaters. In the previous year, however, there were around 32,000 high school graduates.

Leibniz Universität Hannover has almost 4,100 first-semester students. This is around 24 percent less than in the previous year, said the university. “A decline of this magnitude was foreseeable due to the high school break in Lower Saxony.” Overall, the number of students has fallen from around 30,000 to around 29,600.

The Technical University of Braunschweig is more affected by the lack of a high school graduate class in Lower Saxony. According to the university, 1,600 new students began studying here, around 38 percent fewer than in 2019. A total of 18,500 students started the winter semester in Braunschweig. After more than ten years with increasing numbers, the total number of students has been falling since 2019, it said.

All dates are still preliminary. The Ministry of Science expects an overview for all of Lower Saxony in Hanover in early December.
