Universal Music is taking AI chatbot maker Anthropic to court in Nashville, America. According to the record company, the chatbot creates new music that is too similar to songs by artists signed to Universal.
Anthropic is the developer of chatbot Claude. It is seen as a major rival to the popular chatbot ChatGPT. Claude is regularly asked to generate musical compositions. According to Universal Music, “large amounts of copyrighted material” were copied and distributed.
For example, you can ask Claude to create lyrics that match well-known songs like What a Wonderful World of Sweet Home Alabama. According to record companies, the chatbot then produces copies that differ little or not at all from the original.
Universal Music is the music label of pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish. The record company filed the lawsuit together with ABKCO Music and the Concord Music Group.
AI company Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former employees of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The company is seen as one of the most promising companies in the world focusing on artificial intelligence.
Investors see a lot of future in Anthropic. Online store Amazon announced earlier this month that it wanted to invest 4 billion dollars (3.8 billion euros) in the company.
