Music label Universal Music Group (UMG) has started pulling its artists’ music from TikTok after failed negotiations over a licensing deal. As a result, TikTok videos with songs from artists such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Harry Styles have no sound.
Users can now choose to place a new song under their videos.
The previous deal from February 2021 expired on Wednesday. According to an open letter from UMG, TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, does not want to pay a fair price for the music rights. Therefore, TikTok would exert pressure to make an unfavorable deal.
UMG, which is listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange, acknowledges that the case could have consequences for the artists and music producers under its label. But the company says it fights for fair conditions.
TikTok, which has more than a billion users, is disappointed with UMG. According to the app, the label “values its own greed over the interests of its artists.” TikTok calls UMG’s accusations false and says the app is an important platform for discovering and promoting the music company’s artists.
