Universal host materials for red, green and blue high-efficiency single-layer phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes: New record performance

Simplifying the structure of electronic devices is a key step for the future. In this work, thanks a rational design of the host material, we have investigated different molecular associations for red, green and blue Single-Layer Phosphorescent OLEDs (SL-PhOLEDs). This type of devices is very simple, only constituted of the emissive layer and the electrodes and constitutes a real advance for the ecological transition.

Thanks to a structure-properties-device performance study, we have shown how each electronic parameter of the host (HOMO/LUMO energy levels, ET, charge carriers mobility) influences the emission efficiency of the guest phosphor within the device and how a subtle combination of these three parameters is required.

One of the host material displays the highest overall performance ever reported for RGB SL-PhOLEDs using a universal host.

As simplifying the device structure can be a central feature in the future of OLEDs, designing efficient and stable semi-conductors for this purpose is an important step.
