Universal charger for smartphones? EU with proposal in September

The theme of having a universal charger (for all types of smartphones) isn’t exactly new. The idea seems to please users, however, there are brands, such as Apple, that do not “like” this path of standardization.

As we've mentioned in other articles, the goal is to have standardized chargers, which work in all smartphones as well as in other systems. Environmental issues are at the basis of a possible decision. According to data, per year there will be 50 thousand tons of unused chargers (technological waste).

Remember that in 2009, the European Commission pressed and managed to popularize the microUSB in millions of devices, forcing Apple to include a microUSB adapter. A few years later, in mid-2014, they tried again to claim the benefits for consumers, industry and the environment, however, everything remains the same.

According to a study carried out in 2019, a study that was commissioned by the European Commission, the microUSB was still the most used connector. The USB-C connector appeared in second position and Apple's Lightning in third.
