On September 18, 2023, Unity Software executives held a meeting with employees. It discussed changes in the announced business model, which had previously been massively criticized by the developers. About it reported Bloomberg, which learned details about the meeting.

What will change in the business model

Unity will limit commission to 4% of game revenue for customers with more than a million dollars in revenue. To determine the limits, the company will only consider installations completed since January 1, 2024. This means that developers will not have to pay large sums if their games have previously exceeded the threshold. The developers themselves will send Unity data on the number of installations. Before this, the company planned to collect this information independently, using its own tools.

Unity emphasized that this is a preliminary version of the changes that the company is still discussing with partners. Management is not making hasty statements yet, because they do not want the “communications disaster” that occurred after the announcement of the updated business model to repeat.

During the meeting, Unity employees asked top managers how the company would restore customer trust. To this, executives responded that Unity will have to start taking action, not limiting itself to promises, and also take a more careful approach to communications in the future.

At the meeting, Unity CEO John Riccitello emphasized that the updated policy is aimed at generating increased income from the largest customers. According to him, 90% of developers will not be affected by the changed business model.
