Public holiday: What is celebrated on the Day of German Unity

In the so-called “Unification Treaty”, October 3rd in 1990 was named “Day of German Unity” and a public holiday throughout Germany. It is the German national holiday and is intended to commemorate the reunification of the FRG and GDR. This was finally decided on October 3, 1990 with the “entry into force of the accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany”. Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Berlin have been counted as federal states of today’s Federal Republic of Germany.
