Engine developer Unity has announced that John Riccitiello is stepping down as president and CEO after nine years at the helm. James Whitehurst, who previously served as senior advisor and president at IBM, has been appointed to this role on an interim basis.
Just a month ago, Unity made major changes to its pricing model for developers, sparking massive backlash across the gaming industry with its plan to charge for every game installation. This decision will directly affect developers, publishers and distributors. In addition, the revision of Unity’s business model coincided with mass layoffs, which also hit the company’s reputation – in 2023, the company cut its workforce three times to reduce costs.
As a result of the backlash, Unity made concessions, but did not completely abandon its new business model. In response, some developers announced that they would stop using the engine for their future games.
Despite the recent controversy, Unity expects third-quarter revenue to be between $540 million and $550 million, up 67% to 70% year-over-year.
