Unity has launched version 6 of the famous game engine. The company’s new CEO, Matt Bromberg, says he hopes the engine will be a major part of the gaming industry for many years to come.
In September, Unity announced that the new business model of a per-install fee instead of fixed annual fees, which the company introduced last year to immediate and sharp criticism from developers, has been completely deleted. Unity 6 returns to a true subscription service for developers with fixed fees regardless of how many or few players they have. Just like before, there is a free level for hobby developers and small studios with a turnover of less than two million kroner.
For gamers, Unity 6 will lead to games with more detailed and realistic graphics, and especially higher performance. The new engine uses half as much memory bandwidth and on Windows a new technology called Split Graphics Jobs with DirectX 12 is used which in the company’s tests gives CPU response times 40 percent shorter . Even developers will benefit from it, with a smarter interface in the editor.
A big bet with the new version is multiplayer. Unity 6 should facilitate the creation of multiplayer games with a complete library of everything a developer might need, such as a lobby function, voice chat and management of active game sessions. Hopefully this will lead to more games from small indie developers getting multiplayer, which has previously been so complicated that many have to overcome it.
Unity has shared a video, which you can watch above, to show what can be achieved in the new engine. For those curious about development, the company has a lot of resources, as usual, especially a new one sample project which presents the news.
