Uniting Communities: A Gathering for Earthquake Relief in Morocco

A small restaurant on Rue Paganini for a hastily organized gathering. Around twenty people of goodwill took the time to talk this Sunday afternoon to try to join forces, less than 48 hours after the terrible earthquake that struck Morocco. People from the Moroccan community, but not only that, most of them members of the Maison du Maroc 06 association.

“It’s a small meeting to reach an agreement, to unite and prevent initiatives from multiplying a little in all directions, summarizes Oucine Jamouli, president of the association but also restaurateur and associative actor. Concrete things are noted and recorded. We want to see what we can do to ensure that our actions are efficient and that aid is delivered directly.” Ideas are born, take shape. Around the table, varied profiles. “It’s the mobilization of a diaspora”, sums up a lady. Several areas are studied: financial, psychological and material assistance.

Soon a place to store donations

“We will create a bank account for ordering checks, indicates Oucine Jamouli. We have identified some Moroccan associations. The goal is to give money to these local players who know the region perfectly. All this in complete transparency. We will also try to find a place to store what we are given. Associations will be partners.”

The university community and young people from working-class neighborhoods should also be involved. “On site there is no trauma care unit so we will try to work remotely”explains Mohamed Ham, psychopathological professor at the University of Côte d’Azur.

To his right, Toufik Ftaïta continues: “We would like to know the needs of the associations there, we are in contact with them, slips this lecturer at the university. We want to know what foodstuffs they need. An advisory council works in Morocco and would be our partner.”

A general assembly will be held this week to clarify the direction to follow a little more. “It will be more of a coordination than a collective”concludes Oucine Jamouli.
