The assault lasted eight minutes, according to video surveillance cameras, without anyone intervening.
On October 13, around 11 p.m., a woman took a train to Upper Darby, a town in Pennsylvania, United States. A 35-year-old man then sits down next to her and tries to start a conversation. The woman pushes back as best she can the advances of the man who becomes more and more aggressive.
He will finally pounce on her to rip her clothes off and then rape her. All this under the gaze of several other passengers on the train … who are not going to do anything.
Neither attempt to arrest the individual, nor call the police. The assault recorded by the train’s surveillance cameras lasted eight minutes.
“I’m shocked”
“I’m shocked I have no words for it. I just can’t imagine anyone stepping in to help him,” said Timothy Bernhardt, Police Commissioner at Upper Darby, in comments relayed by The Indepedent newspaper.
The man arrested in the act after reporting an agent from the company, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (Septa), was charged with rape and assault.
Authorities are studying surveillance videos to identify possible witnesses. After the assault the woman was taken to hospital.
