The 26th edition of the Gold Cup has fallen prey to the United States. Miles Robinson, a 24-year-old Atlanta United defender, signed for the only goal against deep into overtime Mexico. Ajax player Edson Álvarez became the schlemiel.
At the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, 61,000 spectators watched arch-rivals America and Mexico balance each other for a long time. In the 117th minute it was finally hit. Álvarez caused a free kick, was booked and then lost sight of Robinson: 1-0.

Álvarez played the entire game in midfield. PSV player Érick Gutiérrez came in for defending champion Mexico after 76 minutes. It is the seventh time that America has won the Gold Cup. Mexico is still the record holder with eight overall victories. Countries from North and Central America and the Caribbean participate in the tournament.
Álvarez and Gutiérrez are now going on holiday and then report to Ajax and PSV. The two Dutch top clubs have been preparing for the new season for more than a month. Ajax starts the Eredivisie on August 14 with a home match against NEC, PSV opens against Heracles Almelo. Fighting this Saturday Ajax and PSV for the Johan Cruijff Scale.
